Longtown – The Remains of a Norman Castle

On the same day that we visited Hay-on-Wye in Wales, 2015, we crossed over the boarder back into Herefordshire, England to Longtown.  We did a lot of that during our holiday last year, lots of castles and churches on the boarders to explore, lots of sign posts with castles on, so many to choose from, but choose we did, and this time is was Longtown Castle.  We followed the signs and we were starting to think we had missed a turning, when we suddenly saw the castle over the top of some cottages.


What a lovely surprise, a castle that you can really imagine how it would have looked, when built back in the 12th century.  A motte with a keep and an inner and outer bailey, that have not been built on.  Sometimes it is very hard when looking at a small motte in a field and try to…
